A Glimpse into the History

Uthai Thani has a rich and layered history, deeply intertwined with Thailand’s cultural and political evolution. The area was originally settled by the Mon and Lawa people, and during the Sukhothai Kingdom, it became home to the first Thai settlement in the region, known as Muang U Thai. However, when the river shifted its course, the settlement was abandoned. It wasn’t until the Ayutthaya Kingdom that the area was revitalized by the Patabeut people, a Karen ethnic group, who established it as a strategic border stronghold.

Uthai Thani holds a special place in Thai history as the birthplace of King Rama I’s father, a fact commemorated at Wat Sangkat Rattana Khiri, a temple of great historical significance. The province was renamed Uthai Thani, meaning “Rising Sun City,” reflecting its renewed importance. Later, during the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), Uthai Thani was integrated into Monthon Nakhon Sawan in 1892 and officially established as a province in 1898.
