The Wonders of Hat Yai: More Than Just Its Train History
A Quick Look at Thailand's Southern Beauty

DESTINATION OF THE DAY
Hat Yai

Hat Yai is a large city in southern Thailand, near Malaysia. It's the fifth biggest city in Thailand and has around 191,696 people living just within the city. However, if we include the whole district it's part of - Amphoe Hat Yai - the population rises to 406,513. Even though it's not the capital of Songkhla Province (that title goes to Songkhla), Hat Yai is still very important because it houses The Prince of Songkla University and acts as a hub for transport, business, and tourism in southern Thailand.
A Brief History
Hat Yai, originally a tiny village known as Khok Samet Chun meaning "shore eugenia knoll", became an important rail hub after the construction of the southern railway. The junction that connected it to Songkhla was initially in U Tapao but was relocated to Khok Samet Chun in 1922 due to flooding issues in U Tapao. Back then, only four people lived there but rapid growth followed thanks to investments from a railway contractor named Khun Niphat Chinnakorn. In 1928, Hat Yai evolved into a community and by December 1935, it had become a sanitary district spanning an area of approximately 4.4 km2 under its first mayor, Udom Bunlong.
The name Hat Yai translates to "big beach" which is quite peculiar as it's far from any sea. Historically though, records reveal that during rainy seasons, the town would be located near large flat areas transforming into vast swamps or 'beaches', thereby lending it its name. Its significant expansion came about with the extension of the Southern Railway line making it a key transportation link between Thailand and neighboring countries. This led to further increases in Hat Yai's municipal area over time and ultimately resulted in city status by 1995.
