Phitsanulok Thailand’s River of History
From sacred Buddha images to royal ruins, this ancient city tells stories of kingdoms past along the Nan River.

DESTINATION OF THE DAY
Phitsanulok

This ancient city has long served as a strategic gateway between Thailand's northern and central regions. Phitsanulok's location along the Nan River shaped its destiny as a political, military, and spiritual center through centuries of change.
A Glimpse into the History
A Seat of Lost Kingdoms
Phitsanulok’s significance dates back to the 11th century as part of the Sukhothai Kingdom, though some evidence suggests earlier Mon and Khmer influences. By the 14th century, it became a vital administrative and military hub under Ayutthaya’s rule, guarding the northern frontier. The city’s name—meaning "Vishnu’s Heaven"—hints at its spiritual importance, though wars and floods erased much of its early grandeur.
From Ashes to Revival
In 1463, King Trailok relocated Ayutthaya’s capital here temporarily, cementing Phitsanulok’s political weight. Centuries later, King Naresuan the Great was born within its walls (1555), later liberating Siam from Burmese rule. Despite fires in 1955 and 1957 that destroyed much of its old city, Phitsanulok endured as a resilient witness to Thailand’s unfolding story—where river currents still carry echoes of empires.

Located 130 km from Phitsanulok, Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park is a 76,750-acre park that blends rugged natural beauty with a turbulent past. Its dramatic landscapes feature waterfalls, dense forests, and surreal rock formations, including the 1,617-meter-high summit. From 1967–1982, it served as a stronghold for the Communist Party of Thailand, with remnants like bomb shelters and a political school still visible. Today, trails lead to sites like Lan Hin Pum (rock shelters) and Pha Chu Thong (home to a symbolic red flag), offering a poignant mix of nature and Cold War-era history.
Located along the old Lopburi River banks in northern Ayutthaya, Wat Wihan Thong’s remains hint at its former grandeur as a riverside monastery. Today, only a brick mound, scattered pillars from its ordination hall, and a distinctive 20-rabbet-angled chedi survive, tucked behind stilt houses and a bus depot. Split from neighboring monasteries by modern roads, the site retains an air of quiet mystery, accessible only via narrow paths near Wat Intharam. A weathered Bodhi tree still shades the ruins, standing sentinel over this forgotten fragment of Ayutthaya’s spiritual past.
Nakhon Chum sits in a valley embraced by mountains, once serving as a secret training ground for soldiers under Pho Khun Bang Klang Tao. Broken pieces of ancient glazed ware along the Kwai Noi River hint at its historical significance. The village offers stunning viewpoints like Rong Khao, showcasing sweeping valley views, and Khao Pok Lon, where hikers are rewarded with misty sunrise panoramas. Visitors can stay in homestays, sample local specialties like Lam Gai and Khai Pam, and cycle through scenic rice fields and salt wells. This quiet village blends history, nature, and rural Thai culture into a uniquely immersive experience.
Chat Trakan Waterfall is nestled within the lush wilderness of Namtok Chat Trakan National Park, 145 kilometers from Phitsanulok City.
