DESTINATION OF THE DAY
Uttaradit

Uttaradit may not be on every traveler’s radar, but this unassuming province is a goldmine for adventurers, history buffs, and food lovers alike. From misty mountain peaks in Phu Soi Dao National Park to the legendary tales of Lap Lae Town, Uttaradit blends natural beauty with deep cultural roots. Whether you're chasing waterfalls, exploring Cold War history, or indulging in sweet Langsat and creamy Lin Lablae Durian, this province promises an authentic Thai experience far from the crowds.
A Glimpse into the History
Uttaradit, meaning "port of the north," was once a bustling trade hub along the Nan River. Originally known as Bang Pho Tah It, the town grew rapidly, eventually replacing Mueang Phichai as the provincial capital in the late 19th century. Its strategic location made it a key player in regional commerce, connecting northern Siam with Laos and beyond. The province’s iconic city arch and ancient stone pillars still stand as silent witnesses to its mercantile legacy.
Long before it became Uttaradit, this land was part of the Sukhothai Kingdom, home to ancient city-states like Mueang Fang and Mueang Thung Yang. During the Ayutthaya period, Mueang Phichai emerged as a powerful frontier town, even briefly rebelling against King Naresuan. Centuries later, its ruler earned legendary status as Phraya Phichai Dap Hak ("Lord of Phichai with a Broken Sword") after defeating Burmese invaders in brutal combat—a story still celebrated today.
By the Rattanakosin era, Uttaradit had evolved into a vital administrative and trade center. In 1887, its rising importance led King Rama V to establish it as a subordinate Mueang, and by 1915, it was officially renamed Uttaradit Province. The remnants of its past—colonial-era buildings, wartime relics along the Lao border, and age-old traditions—make it a fascinating destination for those who love history off the beaten path.
