The name “Ang Thong” (gold basin) is believed to have evolved from its earlier name, Bang Kham Thong, referencing the golden rice fields and the region’s basin-like geography.

During the reign of King Taksin, after the fall of Ayutthaya, the province’s main city was relocated to the Chao Phraya River due to the Noi River’s silting. Ang Thong is also celebrated as the birthplace of Likay, a traditional Thai folk performance, and the home of heroes like Nai Dok and Nai Thongkaeo, who fought in the Bang Rachan Battle. Another local hero, Khun Rong Palat Chu, led 400 volunteer fighters against the Burmese army in 1760, sacrificing their lives in defense of the kingdom. Today, his bravery is commemorated at Wat Siroi in Wiset Chai Chan.
