Prachuap Khiri Khan is a coastal province in Thailand, known for its fishing port and stunning bay surrounded by towering mountains. Located 240 kilometers south of Bangkok and near the popular beach resort of Hua Hin, it offers visitors an array of attractions including world-class golf and spa resorts, boutique hotels in Pran Buri, as well as the magnificent Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park with its high peaks, caves and diverse bird species. The province's beauty coupled with its many recreational activities make it a favorite spot for tourists on weekends and holidays.
A Brief History
Prachuap Khiri Khan is a region steeped in history, dating back to the ancient times. It has been home to several civilizations over thousands of years, starting from early Neolithic settlements and later becoming a significant trading center during the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya periods. The province witnessed both prosperity and hardship; it thrived under royal patronage but also endured attacks by Burmese invaders.
One key moment in Prachuap Khiri Khan's history occurred during World War II when Japanese troops used it as an invasion point on December 8, 1941. Every year, a memorial service is held to honor the Thai civilians and air force members who lost their lives fighting against Japan's 143rd Infantry Regiment in what became known as the Battle of Prachuap Khiri Khan. More recently, in 2023, tragedy struck again when a double-decker bus carrying mostly Thai nationals crashed into a tree resulting in numerous casualties.
