Chiang Mai’s Highland Secret
Cool mountain air, terraced rice fields, and hill tribe traditions await in this untouched corner of northern Thailand.

DESTINATION OF THE DAY
Mae Chaem

Tucked away in Chiang Mai’s southwestern mountains, Mae Chaem offers a cooler, quieter alternative to northern Thailand’s tourist hubs. This rural district captivates with its terraced rice fields, forested peaks, and rich cultural tapestry of hill tribes and Thai Yuan communities—all framed by the towering Doi Inthanon nearby.
A Glimpse into the History
A Frontier of Cultures
Mae Chaem’s history intertwines with the Lua people, the region’s earliest inhabitants, followed by migrations of Karen and Hmong hill tribes. In the 19th century, it became part of the Lanna Kingdom’s frontier, serving as a buffer zone between Chiang Mai and Burmese territories. The name “Mae Chaem” derives from the Chaem River, a lifeline for agriculture that shaped the district’s farming traditions.
Modern Development
Once isolated, Mae Chaem gained road access in the late 20th century, though it remains refreshingly undeveloped. The area’s high-altitude climate (1,000+ meters) attracted Thai farmers seeking to grow temperate crops like strawberries and Arabica coffee. Today, it balances agricultural innovation with cultural preservation, offering a glimpse of rural Thailand rarely seen by visitors.
Attractions to Visit in Mae Chaem
Doi Inthanon National Park

Home to Thailand’s highest peak (2,565m), this park boasts waterfalls like Wachirathan and the Twin Pagodas honoring the King and Queen. Cool temperatures year-round make it ideal for hiking through cloud forests.
Mae Chaem Riverside

Stretching 170 kilometers from the Thanon Thongchai Mountains, this vital waterway carves through Chiang Mai’s landscapes before merging with the Ping River near Hot District. For generations, its waters have nourished terraced rice fields, sustained hill tribe villages, and shaped Mae Chaem’s agricultural identity. Today, visitors can witness its legacy through riverside walks, bamboo rafting, and the daily rhythms of farmers tending to crops along its banks.
Ob Luang National Park

Known for its dramatic 30m-deep canyon carved by the Mae Chaem River, often called "Thailand’s Little Grand Canyon." Walk the suspension bridge for thrilling views or spot prehistoric rock paintings. Best visited in the cool season (Nov–Feb).
Wat Pha Sorn Kaew

A mountaintop temple famous for its five white Buddha statues adorned with colorful mosaic tiles. The panoramic views of the valley below are as spiritual as the architecture. A photographer’s paradise, especially at golden hour.
Karen Hill Tribe Villages (e.g., Ban Mae Kampong)

Sustainable communities where Karen people practice traditional weaving and organic coffee farming. Homestays offer immersive cultural exchanges and forest hikes. Their handcrafted textiles make meaningful souvenirs.
Terraced Rice Fields (Seasonal: Aug–Dec)

Vast emerald staircases of rice paddies, especially stunning around Mae Chaem town. At harvest time (Nov–Dec), the fields turn golden, creating surreal landscapes. Sunrise and sunset provide the best lighting for photos.
Mae Pan Waterfall

A stunning multi-tiered cascade within Doi Inthanon National Park, accessible via a scenic 1.5km jungle trail. The waterfall’s pools are perfect for a refreshing dip after hiking. Monsoon season (Jul–Oct) brings the most powerful flows.
Wat Pa Daet

A serene forest temple with a striking Lanna-style chedi and meditation retreats. Monks here practice Vipassana, and visitors can join morning alms rounds. The tranquil atmosphere invites reflection.
