Chai Nat: Where River Riches Meet Artisan Mastery

From ancient temples to serene waterways, Chai Nat offers a quiet escape into Thailand’s heartland culture and heritage.

DESTINATION OF THE DAY
Chai Nat

Nestled along the Chao Phraya River, Chai Nat (ชัยนาท) is a tranquil province where Thailand’s rural soul shines. Often overlooked by tourists, this hidden corner blends historic temples, lush orchards, and slow-paced riverside life. Whether you’re drawn to birdwatching at the Chai Nat Bird Park, marveling at Khmer ruins, or savoring local dishes like pla salid (fermented fish), Chai Nat invites you to step off the beaten path.

A Glimpse into the History

Chai Nat’s history stretches back to the Dvaravati era (6th–11th century), with archaeological finds like the Khmer-style Wat Phra Borommathat Worawihan. The province gained strategic importance during the Ayutthaya Kingdom as a military outpost against Burmese invasions. Its name, meaning "Victorious Land," reflects its role in protecting Siam’s heartland.

In the 19th century, King Rama IV ordered the construction of the Chai Nat Dam, transforming the area into an agricultural hub. Today, remnants of old fortresses and waterways whisper tales of its defensive past, while the Chao Phraya River remains the lifeblood of local farming and fishing traditions.

The temple features exquisite murals painted by HRH Prince of Chumphon, a revered Thai naval master, with captions written in ancient Khmer script dating back to 1890. It's particularly famous for its sacred Buddhist amulets blessed by the temple's highly respected monk, Luangpu Suk, whose traditional Thai-style residence is also preserved on-site. Located 25 kilometers from Chai Nat town, the peaceful temple complex offers shady scenery and a glimpse into Thailand's spiritual heritage.

  • Wat Mahathat in Chai Nat's Sankhaburi district is a historically significant temple believed to date back to 1354 during King Li Thai's reign of the Sukhothai Kingdom. Situated along the Noi River, this "Great Relic" temple features an intriguing mix of architectural styles, including Khmer, Lopburi, and Sukhothai-inspired chedis that showcase the region's cultural influences. The temple complex spans approximately 125 by 100 meters and centers around a ruined viharn housing a massive restored Buddha image. Among its notable structures are a row of seven diverse stupas in the northern section and a distinctive Khmer-style prang with Buddha niches at the northeast corner. While some attributions to King Li Thai remain speculative, the site offers valuable insights into Thailand's religious and architectural heritage through its varied monuments and ruins.
