Buri Ram, known as the “city of happiness,” is a province in Thailand’s Northeast, rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. Located about 410 kilometers from Bangkok, it boasts ancient Khmer ruins, including the stunning Phanom Rung sanctuary, one of Southeast Asia’s best-preserved Angkorian temples. The province is also home to prehistoric archaeological sites, traditional crafts like silk and Mudmee weaving, and unique attractions such as a renowned football stadium and motorsport race track. With its rural charm, authentic Isan culture, and breathtaking landscapes, Buri Ram offers a perfect blend of historical exploration and immersive Thai countryside experiences.
A Glimpse into the History
Buriram, an area with a rich history dating back to the Khmer Empire nearly a thousand years ago, was once known as Muang Pae. This part of Thailand is steeped in historical significance, with numerous ruins scattered throughout bearing testament to its past destruction. The most prominent among these is located atop an extinct volcano and has been preserved within the Phanom Rung Historical Park. Inscriptions found there reveal that Buriram's ruler at the time acknowledged the dominance of the emperor of the Khmer Empire.
In contrast to this ancient period, little information was available about Buriram before Bangkok rose to prominence. However, in the early 19th century during what's referred to as Bangkok Period, Muang Pae underwent some changes and came under Thai rule when it was renamed Buriram. Then administrative reforms were implemented in late 19th century which integrated Buriram into Siam as one of its provinces. Its history continued through various eras including post-Khmer times till late Ayutthaya period where it acted as protectorate for Nakhon Ratchasima city and later emerged during Thon Buri and Rattanakosin periods too. In 1933 further reorganization took place making Buri Ram a province until today.

Officially opened in 2012, the stadium seats 32,600 and features modern facilities and security systems. Nong Hong Sanctuary is a small ancient temple located at the edge of Lam Nang Rong Dam in Amphoe Lahansai. It features three brick prangs (towers) facing east, with a single entrance, reflecting 12th-century Khmer architecture. The sanctuary, dating back to the 16th Buddhist century, consists of three brick pagodas on a shared laterite base, surrounded by a laterite wall and a moat. To reach the site from Buri Ram town, take Highway 218 to Amphoe Nang Rong, then Highway 348 to Amphoe Lahansai, where it is signposted near the dam. Prasat Phanom Rung, located atop Phanom Rung Mountain—an extinct volcano in Buriram Province—is a stunning Khmer temple and one of Thailand’s most significant historical sites. Built to honor Shiva, the Hindu god, the temple complex symbolizes Mount Kailash, Shiva’s celestial abode and the center of the universe. Constructed over several periods between the 15th and 18th Buddhist centuries, the site reflects exquisite Khmer artistry and religious devotion. The name “Phanom Rung” derives from the Khmer term “Wanang Rung,” meaning “vast mountain,” as noted in ancient inscriptions found at the site. It was created by Narentharathitta, a descendant of the Mahithon Pura dynasty and cousin of King Suriya Woraman II, the builder of Angkor Wat.
Na Pho Village, located in Buriram Province, is renowned for its traditional “mudmee” silk, featuring intricate geometric and zoomorphic patterns. The village has gained recognition and support from the Royal Folk Arts and Craft Centre under HM Queen Sirikit, helping to preserve its traditional techniques and designs. Visitors can observe the fascinating silk-making process, from dyeing to weaving, and even try spinning silk threads themselves. The community is also famous for its unique Pu Akani Garments, dyed using red volcanic soil, a local innovation that has turned Ban Charoensuk into a Volcanic Soil Dyeing Demonstration Center. A visit to Na Pho Village offers a hands-on cultural experience, making it an ideal destination for families and groups.
